It’s good and noble to buy certain things you need and use frequently in a larger quantity in order to secure a better price. There are other things that wouldn’t be considered wise to buy in bulk, such as, oh I don’t know, doctrine.

That’s right! There are way too many believers who mindlessly buy into everything that’s said or done from the pulpit. Even the so called “Word people” (whose camp I hail from by the way) pride themselves in being sticklers for the Word, yet they are just as guilty of impulsively conforming to the doctrinal consensus of their peers as anyone else.

Preachers often encouraged their listeners to look into the scriptures for themselves and not to just take their word for it. Maybe the task is so readily encouraged because they know – nobody’s going to actually do it.

10 But, the brethren, straightway, during the night, sent away both Paul and Silas unto Beroea, who, indeed, arriving, unto the synagogue of the Jews, went off; 11 and, these, were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they welcomed the word with all readiness of mind, daily, searching the Scriptures,—whether these things could be so. 12 Many, therefore, from among them, believed, and, of the Grecian women of the higher class, and of men, not a few. (Acts 17.10-12 Rotherham)

Those picky Bereans would never make it in most Church circles today and would probably be labeled as troublemakers. Yet, they were considered to be noble because they were selectively conscientious of what they ultimately received as truth. And isn’t it funny how when they did “the noble thing” many of the higher class believed.

Just a thought, but, maybe faith isn’t actually so blind after all.
