The most important thing about any man is the thoughts he thinks when he thinks about God. At seventeen and newly reconciled to God through Christ, my greatest desire was to see Him in whom I believed; not a physical seeing, but to see with the mind’s eye. Sitting in the most serene place I could find on the Western shores of Lake Michigan I began to exercise intentional, focused thought upon the one whose self-same nature eludes all but those who approach Him in faith. To hold Him in my mind’s focus even for one minute was beyond exhausting, and yet, more and more refreshing with every passing second; not as if to presume a finite mind could ever think to contain or comprehend His infinitude. Thoughts of other things and even my own self-awareness seemed to effortlessly lure my attention away from Him so that I didn’t even realize my thoughts had been hijacked and carried away to the land of unintentional ponderings.

Two decades and many “focus sessions” later, it is clear to me that infrequent thinking about God is novice and even carnal, however,  thinking “rightly” and perpetually about God is our distinct purpose and our great reward. Most of those miserable people in hell today undoubtedly lived their entire lives on this earth and never spent even five minutes in serious thought about God. They now think of Him, but in vain, for they did not heed the saying, “seek ye the Lord while he may be found.” (Is.55:6)

For all those who still have the opportunity of setting your conceptual gaze upon Him who alone is worthy of such a pursuit, He hath said, You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jer. 29:13)

May it be that sincere Christians everywhere revive within themselves the long lost art of thinking about God, for we must train ourselves to be always and ever mindful of Him.

Let faith support us where reason fails, and we shall think because we believe, not in order that we may believe.
